If you just turn off the power to your monitor but leave the cpu running does that save any energy? Does it save more energy to put the computer in hibernate/sleep mode. Well, I have your answer. You can leave your monitor and all the lights in your house as well bright light and turn on all your electric equipment as well. This will not save or use any more energy. No matter what you really do. The coal energy station will burn as much coal as it would use if your house doesn't even exist or exist, and a lot of energy will be lost on the way to your home over that high voltage wires, plus much more will be lost in the local converting stations that convert thousands of volts that go by that wires and need to be converted to 120 volts in your house. So, if I were you I would just light all thing like a Christmas tree. That will not make a difference.

I am trying so hard to keep my bills down. Would it save much energy if I turned my A/C down to about 74 or 76 and then had my ceiling fan on high in the living room and a circulating fan upstairs? (I live in a smaller townhouse). Or is that defeating the purpose. Essentially — Yes, it will save you money. It takes far less energy to power a fan motor (or two) than to run the chiller unit on an AC. You can also run just the fan on your AC unit with the chiller off (just turn the fan switch from "auto" to "on" this will help equalize the temp througout the house better than ceiling fan could, and still costs less than the AC. Remember, ceiling fans don't actually cool the air and usually only affect the room tey are in, circulation-wise. It just makes us feel cooler to have the moving air on us, so you can turn them off when you are not in the room to save even more money.
Your summer utility bills may be higher than necessary. Here are some easy ways to save energy when it is hot. To complete this how-to, you will need: Open A/C vents and doors Direct load program Laundry line Raw dishes Microwave Pool pump timer 78˚ FA/C setting (optional) Step 1: Unplug your spare fridge Got an old refrigerator you keep in the garage? Unplug it for the summer; an inefficient unit in a hot room can really run up your electric bill. Step 2: If you have central air-conditioning, _don’t_ close the vents to unused rooms thinking you’re saving money. Research has found that closing vents reduces efficiency and cooling capacity, costing you more in the long run. And keep interior doors open throughout the house; closed-off rooms increase cool-air leakage to the hot outdoors. Set your A/C at 78 degrees Fahrenheit or higher; home cooling costs increase 12 percent for each degree below that. Step 3: Participate in a direct load program Ask your local utility company if they have a voluntary direct load control program that gives you energy bill credits in exchange for allowing the company to turn off your air conditioner or electric water heater for brief periods during peak demand times. It’s an easy way to save energy. Step 4: Line dry Use the hot temperatures to your advantage and line dry most of what you wash. This alone can shave 5 percent off your energy bill. Step 5: Microwave your meals Maximize summer’s bounty by eating meals that require little or no . . .

I always notice ads promoting energy conservation by telling us to unplug things we're not using like phone chargers. Is there any solid number in terms of how much money you save when you do that. I was so glad to find this — Washing only a full load in cold water. Saves 220 water heater. Try not to use oven till cold weather. 220 runs ac more too. If it is gas, it runs the ac more. Keep the sun out. Caulk around the windows. When not using anything, turn off. Put fridge and hot water heater on save. Keep thermastat over 75 in summer. Under 75 in the winter. Use fan to draw air through the rooms. Use fan in room you hang in. And where you sleep. You can save from $75. 00 to $200. 00. Watch your out side lights. A timer can be set on those.
